Pregnant with her fourth child, Heather Bennett of Greensburg, underwent a C-section on October 16, 2015. Having had a healthy, full-term pregnancy up to this point, the procedure was textbook, or so it seemed. The day after her son Luke was born, Heather was air cared to UC Health due to excessive hemorrhaging, unaware she suffered from DIC, or Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation, a clotting disorder which can be triggered by trauma or surgery. Because of her condition, Heather received 41 total units of blood.

“Needless to say, if I didn’t receive blood, I wouldn’t be here,” says Heather. “You never know what the next second of your life is going to bring. If people weren’t willing to donate, I wouldn’t be here to celebrate my kids’ birthdays or any other special milestones.”
