Asked to become Broadmoor United Methodist Church’s assistant blood drive director in 1993, Henry Ramos reluctantly agreed. When the church’s next blood drive came along that year, the director was nowhere to be found.
“After the blood drive, I asked the committee, where was he? He said, ‘Well, he was talking about taking another job somewhere else, but I don’t know if he did or not,’ ” Ramos recalled. “Oh. So, by default, I was director.”
The Our Lady of the Lake Blood Donor Center couldn’t be happier it worked out that way.
The 89-year-old Ramos has led 89 drives with about 5,000 donors since taking the position, said David Gremillion, the Lake’s Blood Donor Services director.
In May, Ramos received a Presidential Award of Merit from the South Central Association of Blood Banks for his work coordinating the church’s four annual blood drives. The Lake nominated him for the award.
