Pamela Wilson handed out sloppy joes alongside other volunteers during the Hutchinson blood drive on Monday at the First Presbyterian Church, 201 E. Sherman.

But there’s someone missing, the person who solidified the importance of giving blood.

For decades, Wilson gave blood while she worked as a nurse. She retired and continues to give blood, but added volunteering at the blood drive kitchen to her plate. Ever since she started volunteering, Wilson has worked alongside Melva Cummings, the person who brought the need close to home.

In August 2015, Cummings wrecked her vehicle into a driveway culvert at 3503 N. Halstead Street. Cummings was taken to the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center then airlifted to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis in Wichita when she became unstable.

The fractures and internal injuries required multiple surgeries, and blood.
