I recently sat down for coffee with my new friend Wayne Molleur, whom I met at the Orangeville blood drive in October. When we met, Wayne informed me that his next blood donation would be his 220th. What could possibly motivate someone to donate blood over 200 times?
Wayne has hit milestones over the years — donating blood in shopping malls, churches, hotels and high schools, even in provinces outside Ontario: curious to discover if the staff and treats are as good in each locale … Hint: they are! Following in his parents’ footsteps, Wayne became a donor at 17 years of age, inspired at the age of 12 when his friend received a blood transfusion during an appendectomy. He never forgot how his friend might not have survived surgery without the generosity of volunteer blood donors and he was eager to start donating as soon as he was able.
