In 2016, blood donors saved and improved the lives of 27,000 New Zealanders. However, with around 20,000 people leaving the donor registry each year, more blood donors are always needed.
I asked our readers what inspires them to face the needle, and received an overwhelming response.
Susie Hare: My son’s life was saved with two transfusions at age four, when he was diagnosed with leukaemia. They called it go-go juice at the hospital! He’s 23 now.
Alex Moulton: I did my first donation at uni, as I was curious about my blood type. They asked if I’d become a plasma donor. Now I donate fortnightly and just recently made my 100th donation.
Aaron Hermond: I’ve made 172 donations. I ride a motorbike and I’m guessing I’ll need it back someday!
Sharon Hatley: My parents encouraged us to join. Helping others, at no cost to us, except our time. I’m hoping my children see that giving, is one of life’s pleasures.
Tom Sorenson: We lost our daughter to cancer 20 years ago. She needed a lot of blood. I feel this is something I can do as ‘Pay it forward’. I’m now 73 and still giving. (Tom is also a Santa at Westfield Manukau—you might see him around soon!)
