An assisted living facility hosted a special blood drive Wednesday in honor of the son of one of their employees.

Akilah Looney has worked at The Kensington in Hastings for 1.5 years on their memory care floor. Her son, Kingston Levarity, is ten years old. He’s had sickle cell anemia his entire life. The condition decreases the amount of red blood cells and the body and is extremely painful.

“I use to cry and be scared, you know like ‘why me? Why my baby?’ Then I look at other babies who have a lot worse issues than Kingston, and we’re blessed,” said Akilah Looney. “I tell him, “hey, you’re special. You can probably help someone else who’s going through this.”
