WMTW News 8 is teaming up with the American Red Cross for a blood drive.
The drive is happening July 23 at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. One Portland resident said stepping up to donate could save a life.
For years, Ed Suslovic has donated blood and platelets.
“I have been a blood donor all my life, up until now. I started in high school and became a platelet donor years ago,” Suslovic said.
He’s even made lifelong connections along the way.
“I was fortunate enough to be matched with a bone marrow donor 23 years ago to at the time a 10-year-old boy with leukemia, who is now 33 years old and 23 years cancer-free,” Suslovic said.
Years later, the families still make time to see each other. But his generous deeds didn’t stop there.
“I had never thought of donating a kidney before but I saw a story about someone that had donated a kidney to a neighbor and I said well I have bone marrow once and it worked, let’s try the kidney thing,” Suslovic said.
