Few high schoolers can say that they’ve saved hundreds of lives in high school.
But Kearney Catholic High School student Gabby Baack can.
Baack, 17, organized four blood drives this past year, which provided more than 150 “units” of blood for the Red Cross, having the potential to save the lives of those who receive those units.
Baack gave blood for the first time when she was 16 years old, the minimum age to donate. She was inspired by her sister, Alana, who had given blood four years ago.
“I was kind of like, ‘Oh, I want to get into that,’” Baack recalled.
Shortly after, Baack started organizing blood drives herself.
According to Baack, making sure a drive is successful requires a bit of legwork. Though Red Cross, the organization Baack has worked with for all the blood drives she’s organized, helps with much of the set up, it’s the work of the organizer to ensure the drive meets its goal.
