Every two seconds someone in America needs blood and a single donor can save up to three lives. People across the tristate signed up to donate blood at the New Year, New Life blood drive to help save a life. Lives like 18-month-old Amelia Webb. Her parents were preparing for the worst when they learned she was going to have to have multiple surgeries to save her life.
“We were planning her funeral,” Leslie Webb says
Just days after Amelia Webb was born she went into surgery to fix her little heart.
“We found out early on that she had a pretty rare heart defect,” Webb explains. “She had her very first heart surgery at 11 days old.”
Something her parents prepared for.
“We knew that she was going to have to have surgery pretty early on in order to fix those problems,” her mother says.
But during that first time in the hospital, she needed a lot more than doctors to help her.
“Her first hospital stay alone was 54 days and she received 46 units of blood products.”
Now, seven surgeries later, the 18-month-old little girl gets to play and laugh with her big sister.
“One of the reasons she made it was because of generous donors that donated blood,” Webb explains
