Navy veteran Robert Moore got a call one afternoon 10 years ago, asking if he could come donate blood to help save a girl’s life. He had never gotten a call like that before and hasn’t since. He drove over to Tri-City Medical Center and within 15 minutes was giving blood.
“They told me I helped save a life,” Moore said. “They needed me and that felt good.”
Actually, Moore, 77, has helped save several thousand lives. Over roughly four decades he has donated 100 gallons of blood. He gave his 100th gallon on Sept. 7 with balloons and cheers at the San Diego Blood Bank Coastal Donor Center in Vista.
Moore is the 34th person at the San Diego Blood Bank to hit that milestone to date.
