A Greensboro woman who has cancer is using her personal story to encourage people to donate blood as the nation faces a critically low shortage.
WXII 12 News talked with Shaylah Adams, who is currently receiving treatment for her rare type of cancer — alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma.
ALVEOLAR RHABDOMYOSARCOMA:
It’s a soft tissue tumor that is most common in older children and teenagers. It typically begins in embryonic muscle cells (cells that develop into muscles in the body). It can also occur at many places in the body but usually occurs in the trunk, arms or legs.
According to the American Cancer Society, about 400 to 500 new cases of rhabdomyosarcoma occur each year in the United States. The number of new cases has not changed much over the past few decades. Most rhabdomyosarcomas are diagnosed in children and teens, with more than half of them in children younger than 10 years old.
