The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service held its annual celebratory event, in partnership with Scottish Blood Donor Association and Aberdeen City Council, to reward and thank the region’s most committed contributors at Aberdeen’s Beach Ballroom last night.

Gemma Edwards paid a poignant tribute to the generous donors after her daughter Skye received several transfusions following a difficult birth.

The 36-year-old primary school teacher said: “My daughter was born in a really bad way and doctors still don’t really know why – just that there was an unexpected trauma around the time of her birth.

“A normal platelet count should be around 150 to 450, and Skye’s was just seven.

“She had a rash and bruising because her blood couldn’t clot together. She was flown to Glasgow and even put in a drug induced coma.”
