Vander Lee would not be here today had it not been for the generosity of strangers.

The one-year-old was diagnosed with a severe case of the hereditary blood disorder spherocytosis when he was five days old and needs donated blood to survive.

His red blood cells are an abnormal sphere-shape, meaning his body thinks they are “bad blood” and sends them to his spleen to be destroyed.

He was just two weeks old when he had his first blood transfusion and has needed the procedure eight times since.

“If he didn’t get the blood transfusions, we wouldn’t have our son with us today,” his mother Jacky Lee said. “It was literally life or death for us.”
