A man who has to have blood transfusions every month for a serious disease has emphasized the importance of donations .
Sid Thomas, a 53-year-old mechanic from Nottingham, says that blood donation means “life or death” to him.
Mr Thomas, a father-of-four, suffers from sickle cell anemia, a serious inherited blood disorder where red blood cells form into an irregular sickle shape.
This irregular shape subsequently prevents them from moving around the body, with many cells likely to get stuck in blood vessels.
This can then cause a ‘crisis’, a severe episode of pain that can lead to further complications.
