Don Hamilton, 86, of Bridgeport is a lifelong music educator/enthusiast and author who needed 3 pints of blood after heart surgery.
Because blood donations were available, he has been able to resume his active lifestyle — playing multiple musical instruments, refurbishing them for aspiring students and writing.
“When you need blood, you need it now, not next week. That’s why it is so important to donate blood if you can,” Hamilton said. “If the necessary amount of blood had not been available at that moment, I very likely would have died. I did not realize the seriousness at the time. However, I was very close to death.”
