Every blood donation is a special gift, a personal sacrifice for someone else. After 400 lifetime donations, Oakwood donor Glenn Stoops is still making it look easy.
“Fifty gallons? Who’s counting!” said Glenn. “Just another day. A walk in the park.”
For Glenn, donating is also a ride on his bike or a drive in his convertible. When the weather is favorable, the top goes down for the drive to the Dayton CBC Donation Center, or he will hop on his trusty Schwinn.
A stubborn love of cycling helped convert Glenn into a dedicated donor. He was on a Saturday morning bike ride through Kettering in 1979 when a car ran a red light, struck him, and tossed him 30 feet into the air.
He broke his hand protecting his head and suffered a fractured femur, a surgery that required a blood transfusion.
“Six months to the day from my surgery the blood center called me and said, ‘Do you want to come down and donate?’” said Glenn. “I had been to a few mobiles at my church, but it was my first time at the center.”
