Greg Noland jokes that it’s the best part of his day as he reclines back in the long gray chair. He’s at ease, as Phoenix Woods from Indiana Blood Center cleans his skin and preps the needle.

“It’s just a short little pain and once it goes in it doesn’t even hurt while you’re giving,” Noland, 65, said. “It’s just one little prick, is all it is.”

While many have a fear of giving blood, the process is an easy routine for Noland by now. In the bloodmobile stationed outside of First Presbyterian Church, he donated his 100th unit of blood on Wednesday.

And it’s not a goal he necessarily set out to accomplish.

Back when Noland was a freshman in college at General Motors Institute – now Kettering University – he simply wanted to discover his blood type and was told donating was the best way to find out.
