During the holidays, many find the spirit of the season in giving to others. Amongst the exchange of bags and boxes, one can give the most material of gifts — that of saving a life through blood donation.

Every two seconds in the United States, someone is in need of blood, according to the American Red Cross.

During the holiday season, the supply needed to meet this demand decreases, with the hustle and bustle that comes with the time of year.

“There are a number of different deterrents during the winter season,” said Laura McGuire, external communications manager for the American Red Cross Badger-Hawkeye Blood Services Region. “During the holidays, people go on vacations, go to the holiday parties. … It’s the week of Christmas that regular donors cancel their appointments and go and live life.”
