It was a death that she could never forget that prompted her to begin offering the gift of life.

Mary Cohen, 62, of Absecon, was one of scores of people on Monday, July 24, to participate in the Red Cross Blood Drive sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Villa Marie No. 6312 at Assumption Regional Catholic School.

“Because of a loss of a family member 20 years ago,” she said, “I started donating blood.”

“I don’t know,” she says with a giggle of her exact total.

Cohen remembers the family member who suffered from leukemia and was only 18 months old when she died.
