Shirley Kort never thought throughout the more than 50 years she has donated blood herself and volunteered at Red Cross Blood drives in Blue Hill that she would need a blood transfusion herself.

The 75-year-old Blue Hill woman has donated 92 units while giving off and on over that time.

In April, she was admitted to Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings as well as the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha due to problems with gallstones.

While undergoing treatment, Kort experienced still-unexplained hemorrhaging and needed blood transfusions totaling 15 units of blood and three units of plasma.

Kort is doing well now and will be back to volunteering at the Blue Hill community blood drive from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Blue Hill Community Center.
