For the second year, the family of Remington Halker, former seventh-grader at Gretna Middle School, will host a blood drive in his memory.
Described as “kind, happy and driven,” Halker was involved in band, show choir and the High Ability Learner program. He also loved gymnastics and competing at meets.
Halker needed 69 units of blood during emergency surgery due to complications during treatment for an adrenal gland tumor which ultimately led to his death in early January 2017.
“We just thought it would be a good way to keep Remington’s name alive and to honor his memory,” Lisa Halker, Remington’s mother, said. “So many people asked us when he was in the hospital if there was something they could do. This just seemed like it would be a good thing for us to pay it forward and a good way to help those who need blood every day.”
