Paul Gillis, from all evidence, takes comfort in ritual. This is a good thing because this Tuesday’s routine was the same as last Tuesday’s and, baring something unforeseen, will be identical to next Tuesday’s.
Gillis, who is 61, arose in his house in the Dartmouth suburb of Colby Village, where he has lived for the past 28 years.
He drank his black coffee and ate his toast with peanut butter, his orange, his banana and his yogurt.
He chatted about the day ahead with his United Church minister wife, Susan MacAlpine-Gillis. He walked the dog. (The couple do a little dogsitting; this week’s guest was a Yorkie named Basil.)
Then he climbed into their Hyundai Sonata and made for Halifax.
At the old Bayer’s Road Shopping Centre he parked, got out and walked into the Canadian Blood Services collection agency.
