Karl Irving has been donating blood for more than 40 years, but now his regular donations have never been more important.
After being diagnosed with coronavirus in March, the Wanniassa resident’s donations are being used as part of a COVID-19 clinical trial to help learn more about how the virus operates.
The 67-year-old contracted the virus after picking up a friend from Canberra’s train station. The friend had been a passenger onboard the Ruby Princess cruise ship, which has been linked with hundreds of COVID-19 cases.
“I was in the same house as my wife for five days afterwards and she didn’t even get it at all,” Mr Irving said.
“I was just very tired. I had my temperature checked and I never had a fever while I was infectious.”
