Sitting in a room on the first floor of the Gibbs Cancer Center this week, Abby Cantrell was all smiles.
The 20-year-old Cowpens native was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia last month and just finished a six-day round of intravenous chemotherapy — but her sense of humor and positive outlook has carried her through.
After multiple blood and platelet transfusions when she was first diagnosed, a blood drive will be held in her honor to help replenish the blood supply.
“My blood levels were ridiculously low. They were really panicking,” Cantrell said. “This is a good tool to help the community give back where it’s needed. … I definitely put a hurting on the blood bank.”
The drive will be held at the Cowpens Farmers Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and will include a bake sale. The Blood Connection will help facilitate blood donations.
