A first-grade teacher in Amherst has started an annual lifesaving tradition at her school after a student battled a serious medical condition.

Carter Mock endured painful treatments for bone cancer at Boston Children’s Hospital and has needed a lot of blood transfusions. Just one pint can make a huge difference for young patients.

“For me as his teacher, I thought, ‘Here’s something I can do,'” said Liz Alexakos, his first-grade teacher.
