Maddalena Tray’s entrance into the world in February 2017 was not easy. At birth, she was diagnosed with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, disseminated intravascular coagulation, kidney and liver failure, and possible brain damage. It’s hard to imagine that a tiny baby could endure all these medical issues.

The night she was born, she received her first two liters of blood, and more than 40 followed during her 40-day stay in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit). “If she hadn’t received that blood, there was no other option for her. She wouldn’t have survived,” said Maddalena’s mother, Nancy. “That’s why blood donors are so important.”
