Jennifer Kirby will never hesitate to give blood again after several transfusions saved her father’s life last year.
Joe Courville’s 87-day journey from near death to recovery began last summer with sudden stomach pain and vomiting. His wife rushed him to the emergency room at Decatur Morgan Hospital Parkway Campus as his pancreas was shutting down.
Kirby said Courville was quickly moved to the hospital’s main campus, where he stayed for nearly a month in the intensive care unit. The Moulton resident’s liver, kidneys and bowels also were failing.
“His first blood donation was in Decatur,” Kirby said. “His temperature would jump really high some days and his heart rate stayed at 120-130.”
