As soon as Nikki Wilkes and her mother Lori Russell realized there was a massive blood shortage, they sprung into action.
“How can I help the community? How can I serve the community,” Nikki said Lori had been asking.
Lori has seen the blood crisis up close- diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in November. Battling intense chemotherapy, Lori spent 28 straight days in the hospital.
She needed blood transfusions- but the hospital’s supply was scarce. Lori would only receive her transfusions if her blood count was extremely low. Due to supply issues, some of the blood transfusions she received were not an exact match.
