A special blood drive held Tuesday in Burnsville helped one man pay it forward.

Two years ago, while riding his bicycle home from work at MHC Software, Bryan Joas was involved in a hit-and-run accident south of Lakeville.

He was critically hurt, spending almost three months in the hospital and undergoing a dozen surgeries while receiving nearly 50 blood transfusions.

Joas credits those transfusions for his survival.

“It saved my life,” he said. “Without it, I wouldn’t be here today.”

After the crash, Joas’ company started a blood drive – calling it “#Joasstrong.”

And Tuesday, during the third annual installment of the event, he donated blood for the first time since the accident.
