The need for blood donors is at an all-time high following the pandemic.

But one man from Ohio has been doing it all along.

Closing in on 1,000 units donated, Al Whitney stopped in Weirton on Monday to give two units of platelets to Vitalant.

The 84-year-old Whitney, the founder of Platelets Across America, has donated 991 blood and platelet units through his lifetime.

“When somebody donates blood or platelets like I’m doing, I’m not donating platelets. They’re not donating blood. We’re donating life,” he said.
