Hoxworth Blood Center is struggling currently with a drop in donors, which tends to happen during the busy summer months.
But a little girl named Brynn, who needs donations herself, is asking for help.
Brynn was diagnosed with factor XIII deficiency shortly after she was born in 2019. It’s an extremely rare blood disorder characterized by abnormal blood clotting that may result in abnormal bleeding.
Brynn receives Corifact, which is human-derived plasma, through a port in her chest as part of her routine treatment plan.
But blood products like plasma are a limited resource and can’t be manufactured in a lab, which means Hoxworth relies on volunteer blood donors to ensure a steady and stable supply for patients, including Brynn.
To date, Brynn has received 800 infusions of plasma.
Jackie Marschall of Hoxworth recently shared about these plasma donations that Brynn needs. She said other blood products, such as platelets, are also needed right now.
